Single Mother Faces Eviction Amid Housing Crisis
María, 30, a single mother and domestic violence survivor, is battling eviction from her home in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Currently facing a court hearing, she fears that her nine-year-old son and she could soon find themselves homeless. The landlord has increased the rent from €450 to over €850, pushing her to seek help for the first time in her life, as she can no longer afford the rise.
Scheduled for eviction on September 7, María has yet to find alternative housing. Despite social workers certifying her vulnerability, she remains uncertain about her future. “I’ll have to leave; there’s no postponement,” she says.
María’s situation highlights a broader housing crisis affecting vulnerable individuals. Affordable rentals are scarce, and the shelters she has approached are overwhelmed with demand.
The only option she’s been given is temporary accommodation in a hostel funded by Cáritas, which she fears won’t provide a stable solution. “I would have to share a space with other mothers, which would be a dramatic change for my child,” she explains, adding that he’s starting to notice the packing without understanding the situation.
Despite being recognised as a victim of domestic violence, her attempts to access dedicated resources have failed. “I feel disappointed and helpless. I’ve paid my rent on time for five years,” she laments.
María has always managed to support herself but now finds it impossible. Without family support, she cannot afford more than €500 for rent, with landlords demanding excessive guarantees. “It’s not a lack of money; it’s a lack of housing,” she insists.
Living in a damp basement flat, which offers little ventilation or light, her son’s health has suffered due to the conditions. If evicted, María fears having to leave behind furniture and appliances she has bought.
As she awaits the court’s decision, María hopes for a miracle to secure housing before losing her home. “I just need to find an affordable rental. I don’t want charity, just a chance,” she stresses.
