The Popular spokesperson, Luz Reverón, questions the Vice-President of the Government of the Canary Islands and Minister of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Self-Employed, Manuel Domínguez, regarding the support measures for the self-employed in cases of temporary incapacity and the hiring of individuals over 52 years old.
Concerns About Depopulation and Family Support
The MP for the Popular Parliamentary Group, Juanma Casañas, inquires about the initiatives that the regional government will implement in the coming year to combat depopulation and support families.
The agenda for the Popular Group includes updates on the standard costs of freight transport, a report from the Department of National Security, the situation of families caring for dependent individuals, the status of various projects on La Palma’s road network, and the current situation of the maritime route between Puerto del Rosario and Cádiz.
The Popular Parliamentary Group will ask Vice-President Manuel Domínguez in the upcoming plenary session on 9 and 10 June about the support measures for the self-employed in cases of temporary incapacity and the hiring of individuals over 52 years old.
Support for Self-Employed Individuals
In this context, spokesperson Luz Reverón states, “When the self-employed are unwell or temporarily incapacitated, they cannot afford to close their business, as bills keep coming.” She adds that “thousands of Canarians over 52 continue to encounter too many closed doors when seeking job opportunities, despite a lifetime of experience, effort, and contributions.”
Furthermore, the MP remarks that “while Sánchez’s government is too occupied providing explanations on national issues, the Government of the Canary Islands is still responding to citizen needs” thanks to new measures rolled out by the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Self-Employed. “The Canarians did not elect us to comment on the internal problems of the PSOE. They elected us to govern, to manage, and to improve people’s lives,” concludes Reverón.
Economic and Social Development in Rural Areas
On another note, the MP for El Hierro, Juanma Casañas, will question the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, about measures the regional Executive will introduce in the coming year to promote economic and social development in rural municipalities and non-capital islands to combat depopulation and support families.
“Developing a life project today in some rural municipalities or non-capital islands is more expensive, and in places like El Hierro, the overall costs of energy, transport, and housing impact these areas more severely,” states Casañas. “Canarias has always faced disadvantages, but under the recent socialist government, we are reminded of the consequences every time they govern: unprecedented inflation, an unaffordable shopping basket, impossible housing, and the PSOE blaming others for current issues, when we all know their focus over the years,” he adds.
Updates on Logistic Costs
Updating Fixed Costs
Additionally, MP Rebeca Paniagua has put forward an initiative to demand from Sánchez’s government an update on the standard costs of freight transport to and from the Canary Islands.
“The Canary Islands’ economy is entirely reliant on maritime and air transport to ensure the supply of essential goods,” explains the MP. “This dependency makes logistical costs a crucial factor for the economic and social stability of the archipelago, positioning transport as one of the key elements to correct inequalities stemming from insularity and remoteness,” she adds.
Further Initiatives
Moreover, Popular MP Mónica Muñoz will summon the Minister for Presidency, Public Administration, Justice and Security to discuss a report from the Department of National Security (DSN), which identifies the Canary Islands as one of the most sensitive and vulnerable regions in Spain.
Another appearance initiated by the Popular Group will be from the Minister for Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families, regarding the situation of families with dependants, individuals in dependency situations, and those with serious illnesses under their care, which will be defended by MP María Saavedra.
Current Status of Infrastructure
The status of ongoing works and projects in the La Palma road network and the current situation of the maritime route between Puerto del Rosario and Cádiz regarding its potential suspension rounds off the Popular Group’s initiatives.
