Data up to April 2026 shows a sustained increase in the collection of light containers and paper-cardboard, highlighting citizen involvement in selective separation
La Laguna is progressing in its commitment to sustainability and the circular economy, registering significant increases in the selective collection of light containers and paper-cardboard during the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. This confirms the positive trend the municipality has been experiencing in recent years.
Data collected from January to April reveals that the collection of light containers reached 806,040 kilograms, compared to 696,050 kilograms recorded in the same period of 2025, marking an increase of 15.8%. In particular, notable increases occurred in January, with a growth of 25.3%; March, with 17.7%; and February, with 13.9%.
In terms of paper-cardboard, the trend is similarly upward. From January to April 2026, 1,198,270 kilograms were collected, up from 1,025,550 kilograms in the same period last year, representing a cumulative increase of 16.8%. Significant increases were seen in January, at 23%, and April, with growth exceeding 19%.
Fran Hernández, the Councillor for Municipal Services, commented on these results, highlighting that “an increasing number of residents are incorporating recycling into their daily habits. These data reflect that selective separation is now a part of the collective commitment of La Laguna to sustainability and environmental care.”
Hernández further emphasised that “the excellent recycling figures and the growing collaboration of the public in selective separation have been crucial for La Laguna to receive the Golden Broom this week, one of the main national recognitions in urban cleanliness and sustainability. This award acknowledges the joint efforts of residents, municipal workers, and the City Council.”
The consolidated data from 2025 also showed very positive figures, with a total of 2,236,510 kilograms of light containers and 3,296,982 kilograms of paper-cardboard collected throughout the year, providing a solid foundation on which the municipality continues to improve this year.
The Municipal Services area will keep promoting actions aimed at strengthening the network of containers, optimising the collection system, and implementing awareness-raising and environmental education campaigns that help enhance the quality of disposed waste and reduce the presence of unsuitable items.
“Advancing towards a more sustainable municipality is a shared task. Our goal is to continue facilitating recycling in all the towns and neighbourhoods of La Laguna so that every small action has a positive impact on the present and future of our municipality,” concluded the councillor.
