Exploring Tenerife’s Spectacular TF-21 Route

As the altitude increases, expansive Canary Island pine forests, part of the Corona Forestal Natural Park—the largest protected natural space in the Canaries—come into view. The route continues to gain height, placing travellers above the famous sea of clouds that characterises the island. From many viewpoints, it is possible to simultaneously gaze at the Atlantic Ocean, Tenerife’s peaks, and the profile of Teide looming on the horizon.
The road also passes through municipalities such as Santa Úrsula, Los Realejos, Vilaflor, Granadilla de Abona, and Adeje, linking various points across the island’s geography.

TF-21 boasts numerous viewpoints scattered along the route, many of which are considered essential stops for visitors to Tenerife. From these points, one can enjoy some of the best views of Teide, the vast Canary Island pine forests, and the dramatic volcanic formations characteristic of the island’s interior. Among the standout locations is the area surrounding Vilaflor, the highest municipality in the Canaries, home to the renowned Pino Gordo—one of the oldest and most monumental trees in the archipelago. The starting point of this route, La Orotava, is worth a visit in its own right. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in Tenerife and preserves one of the best-preserved historical sites in the Canaries. Key attractions include the Casa de los Balcones, the Victoria Gardens, the Church of Our Lady of the Conception, and the Plaza de la Constitución. The ultimate reward arrives upon reaching Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most impressive natural spaces in Europe. Here, the landscape transforms completely. The pine forests give way to vast volcanic plains, solidified lava flows, and rock formations reminiscent of extraterrestrial scenery. Dominating the landscape is Teide itself, standing at 3,718 metres—Spain’s highest peak and the third-largest volcanic structure on the planet measured from its base.
