The Canary Islands Government, through public company Gesprotur, has installed 54 smart bins with self-compaction systems across several municipalities in the archipelago. This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Tourism and Employment, aims to enhance waste sorting, improve cleaning services, and support sustainable modernization of tourist areas.
The new bins are powered by solar energy, allowing them to significantly increase their storage capacity compared to standard bins. This technology reduces the frequency of emptying and facilitates more efficient waste management, especially in high-traffic visitor areas.
Equipped with real-time sensors, the bins monitor their fill levels, enabling better organisation of cleaning routes and minimising unnecessary trips. According to Gesprotur, this technology enhances operational efficiency and lowers the environmental impact of waste collection.
Ignacio Solana, CEO of Gesprotur, praised the project’s positive reception and its potential for expansion throughout the Canary Islands. The bins are strategically placed in partnership with local councils to serve key tourist hotspots. The initial phase includes municipalities such as Villa de Moya in Gran Canaria; Garachico, Los Silos, Santiago del Teide, Adeje, and La Matanza de Acentejo in Tenerife; and Yaiza in Lanzarote.
This project was awarded to Future Street España, S.L. for a total of €219,144.90.
