Canary Islands topped Spain’s tourist apartment rankings in May, recording over 1.8 million overnight stays, according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). However, this marks an 8.7% decrease compared to the same month last year. Within the archipelago, Tenerife was the standout destination, logging more than 613,000 stays in tourist apartments in May.
On a national level, overnight stays in non-hotel accommodations, including apartments, campsites, rural lodgings, and hostels, rose by 3.6% to exceed 12.1 million. Stays by residents increased by 3.7%, while non-resident stays grew by 3.5%. The average length of stay was 3.4 nights per traveller.
For tourist apartments specifically, overnight stays increased by 2.8% across Spain. Resident stays surged by 11.5%, though non-resident stays saw a slight decline of 0.2%, with the average stay dropping by 8.6% to four nights.
Non-residents accounted for 72.2% of stays in apartments, with the UK being the largest source market, making up 36.1% of the total. In terms of occupancy rates, the Community of Madrid had the highest, at 83.1% of available apartments. Among accommodation types, campsites saw the most growth in May, with a 7.5% increase in overnight stays, while rural tourism rose by 1.1%. Hostels were the only type to report a decline, down 6.6%.
