Transformation of Tenerife’s Key Access Point Underway
Investment Plans and Project Overview
The transformation of one of the busiest access points in Tenerife is now in progress. Mercatenerife has launched its largest investment plan in history, with a programme amounting to nearly five million euros set for 2026. The most visible project involves the landscape regeneration of a large slope located next to the TF-1 motorway.
On Friday, Valentín González, the Councillor for the Primary Sector of the Cabildo of Tenerife, visited the site alongside Mercatenerife’s manager, Alejandro Fernández, to oversee an initiative that will require an investment of 3.3 million euros and has an execution period of eight months.
Description of the Project
The works are taking place on a slope owned by Mercatenerife, situated on the right side of the TF-1. This area is currently in a state of considerable deterioration due to the proliferation of invasive vegetation, the accumulation of debris, and soil loss caused by water erosion.
The affected area covers approximately 54,000 square metres; however, due to the steep gradient of the land, the actual surface on which work will be undertaken extends to 64,778 square metres. According to González, the project arises from a collaboration agreement between Mercatenerife and the Roads Department of the Cabildo of Tenerife to address a long-standing demand related to road safety and slope stabilisation to prevent potential landslides.
An Unprecedented Investment
The island authority highlighted that this initiative is part of an unprecedented investment strategy for Mercatenerife. Specifically, the entity will execute investments worth 4,948,000 euros this year through its Action, Investment, and Financing Plan. Moreover, the growth trend is evident as the investments accumulated over the last three years have already surpassed 12 million euros.
González affirmed that these projects will solidify Mercatenerife’s position as a logistical reference in the Canary Islands, focusing on models based on efficiency and sustainability.
Sustainability and Control Measures
The investments being developed during this period are centred around two main strategic pillars: sustainability and energy efficiency on one hand, and improved accessibility, safety, and control systems on the other. The Cabildo emphasises that the landscape recovery of the TF-1 environment will also enhance the image of one of the main entry points to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, while restoring a degraded space and mitigating the effects of erosion on the land.
