SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 19 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has detected several low-frequency seismic activity pulses in the last 24 hours beneath the island of Tenerife, primarily in the area west of Las Cañadas del Teide, totalling 79 earthquakes.
Details of the Seismic Activity
The first pulse was recorded just before 05:15 on Thursday morning and lasted only 11 minutes. Subsequent pulses occurred throughout the evening, continuing until 05:21 on Friday.
The initial pulse comprised 16 earthquakes located at depths ranging from 8 to 17 kilometres below sea level, with magnitudes between 0.6 and 1 on the Richter scale.
During the period beginning at 16:42 on Thursday and lasting until 05:21 on Friday, an additional 63 seismic events were detected automatically, of which 14 were able to be located.
Magnitude and Depth
These events were located at depths between 8 and 15 kilometres, with magnitudes varying from 0.4 to 0.8.
The majority of the hypocentres are situated in the western area of Las Cañadas, as seen in previous occurrences. Additionally, a tremor was recorded in Icod de los Vinos with a magnitude of 0.3, at a depth of 2 kilometres.
Comparative Analysis
This seismic activity is similar to that recorded in February and March, although with less energy. It is characterised by low-frequency hybrid events, which do not exhibit a repetitive pattern and are imperceptible to the local population, according to IGN.
Monitoring and Risk Assessment
The institute specifies that this type of activity does not increase the short- or medium-term risk of an eruption. Continuous monitoring is maintained in Tenerife through a network of more than 100 stations, with provisional data pending further detailed analysis.
