SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 11 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, hopes that Tenerife will become a “symbol of empathy, dignity, and the defence of human rights” with the visit of Pope León XIV to the island as part of his apostolic journey to Spain.
Significance of the Visit
“We believe that the Pope’s perspective can help the world better understand what we are experiencing here,” she stated in remarks provided to the media. This visit carries “enormous human, social, and moral significance” and will highlight the ongoing migration crisis affecting the Canary Islands.
Historical Moment
Dávila emphasized that the visit of Pope León XIV is not only a “historic event” but also a glance “towards a land that is intimately familiar with migration realities, hosting, and the responsibility of being Europe’s southern border.” She reminded everyone of the island’s reputation for being a “solidary, open, and aware people” who “have never turned their backs on suffering.”
Preparations for Reception
The island’s president noted the extensive coordination underway to warmly welcome the Holy Father this Friday. An “extraordinary” security, emergency, and healthcare plan has been implemented, along with increased public transport services to facilitate access to events anticipated to draw large crowds.
“Tomorrow, Tenerife will show something very important to the world: The island becomes a symbol of empathy, dignity, and the defence of human rights, and the Pope’s perspective can help the world better understand what we are living through here,” she added.
