SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 11 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV this Friday at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will feature specially created liturgical ornaments that will remain in the Diocese of Nivariense as a memory of this historic visit.
Crafted in specialised workshops in Bergamo, Italy, these ornaments have been designed to reflect the identity of the Canary Islands and the spiritual significance of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus celebrated during the Mass.
Symbolism of the Ornaments
The central galloon combines various shades of blue, evoking the ocean surrounding the islands. This sea is an essential part of the archipelago’s history and now serves as a symbol of hope and unity among peoples, as noted by the Diocese.
In this same context, the plight of many migrants who have crossed these waters in search of a better life is echoed. From a faith perspective, this blue also refers to the water that flows from the Heart of Christ, a source of mercy and life.
Accompanying these blues are dark tones inspired by the volcanic soil of the Canary Islands, while cornaline stones embedded in the decoration provide an intense orange-red colour reminiscent of the lava that shaped the islands.
This same hue also evokes the ardent love of the Heart of Jesus, which is central to the liturgical celebration.
Distinctive Elements
The mitre and the back of the chasuble incorporate the Pope’s coat of arms, emphasising the unique character of this celebration.
The ensemble is completed with several palliums for the chalices that feature the image of the Heart of Jesus and replicate motifs inspired by the main design of the chasuble, maintaining a cohesive symbolic and artistic unity.
All of this has been donated by a family that wishes to remain anonymous.
Additionally, the chalice used during the Eucharist will hold special significance and will later reside in the diocese as a gift from Pope Leo XIV.
