Parking Arrangements for Pope León XIV’s Visit to La Laguna
La Laguna will have large alternative parking areas available this Friday due to the visit of Pope León XIV to the city. Given the traffic restrictions and parking limitations planned for the historic centre, the local council has advised avoiding unnecessary travel and using public transport whenever possible.
The main areas for parking will include the Alcampo Shopping Centre esplanade and several free parking spaces at the Guajara Campus of the University of La Laguna. This measure aims to facilitate parking for those who need to access the municipality, allowing them to park outside the most affected area and continue their journey by bus or tram.
Alternative Parking Locations this Friday in La Laguna
The alternative parking zones will be located outside the historic centre and close to public transport connections. The goal is to prevent private vehicles from entering the most security-restricted areas.
The first significant parking area opened will be the Alcampo Shopping Centre esplanade, which is spacious and well-connected to the municipality’s access routes.
Parking will also be available at various points on the Guajara Campus, particularly around the faculties of Fine Arts and Law, as well as in the vicinity of the General Aulario of Guajara.
Although the University of La Laguna will not hold any physical lectures during the day, these parking spaces will be opened to assist with vehicle parking. From there, users will be able to access bus and tram stops located just a few metres away.
Park Outside the Centre and Continue by Public Transport
The Councillor for Mobility in La Laguna, Domingo Galván, has reminded citizens that all institutions involved in the arrangements have asked the public to avoid unnecessary travel during the Pope’s visit.
Nonetheless, the town hall recognises that many people will need to go to the historic centre for work, family, health, or other reasons. Thus, areas for park-and-ride facilities have been designated to allow vehicles to park outside the zones with stricter restrictions.
The municipal recommendation is to park at Alcampo or Guajara and continue the journey by public transport. Both TITSA and MetroTenerife have announced service enhancements and routes to accommodate expected passenger movement during Friday morning.
Closed Parking Facilities in La Laguna Due to the Pope’s Visit
The Municipal Society of Housing and Services, MUVISA, has announced that two of its parking facilities will be entirely closed during this operation.
The underground parking at Plaza del Cristo and the parking facility on Rodríguez Moure Street will close from 14:00 on Thursday, June 11, and will remain out of service until 14:00 on Friday, June 12.
From that time, both parking facilities will fully reopen and resume normal operations.
The closure particularly affects a key area within the historic centre, as Plaza del Cristo will be one of the primary locations for Pope León XIV’s visit to La Laguna.
Alternatives for MUVISA Subscribers
Subscribers of the parking facilities at Plaza del Cristo and Rodríguez Moure will have a specific alternative during the 24 hours of closure.
MUVISA has designated the Las Quinteras parking facility as the reference space, which will exclusively accommodate vehicles affected by these restrictions during this period.
This measure aims to minimise the impact on regular users of these parking facilities who will not have access to their spaces while the restrictions are in effect.
Areas Where Parking Will Not Be Allowed
The visit of Pope León XIV will necessitate parking restrictions on numerous streets within the historic centre and its surroundings. These limitations are part of the security and coordination measures planned to ensure the smooth conduct of events in the city.
Affected areas include Plaza del Cristo, Nava y Grimón, Quintín Benito, Cabrera Pinto, Tabares de Cala, Anchieta, Plaza del Adelantado, Quinteras, Santo Domingo, Padre Herrera, and Juan de Vera, among others, close to the procession route and security areas.
There will also be restrictions in access areas such as Camino Las Mercedes, Las Peras, Concepción Salazar, Camino La Rúa, Luisa Estany, Camino El Cañaveral, Pintor José Aguiar, Camino Pista Militar de San Roque, and Ladera de San Roque.
Therefore, the Town Hall recommends avoiding attempting to access the historic centre by car on Friday morning and to remove vehicles from the affected areas before the restrictions take effect.
