Kadija Teles and Aninha Paschoal to Take Audiences on a Musical Journey through Afro-Brazilian Roots This Thursday at the Convent of Santo Domingo
The Cool Moon Festival continues its exploration of world music with the performance of Baião de Duas, a project created by Brazilian artists Kadija Teles and Aninha Paschoal. They will be performing this Wednesday at 8:30 PM at the Convent of Santo Domingo in La Laguna, as part of the festival’s tenth edition. This event is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, Islas Canarias, Promotur, ICDC, the Cabildo of Tenerife, and the municipalities of La Laguna, Tacoronte, and Teguise.
Artistic Journey through Brazilian Traditions
Based in Spain, both musicians maintain a deep connection to Brazil’s sonic traditions. They have devised an artistic proposal exploring the rhythmic richness of their homeland with an original and contemporary perspective. Through vocals, percussion, and piano, Baião de Duas revisits classic Brazilian songs with unique arrangements that emphasise percussion and Afro-Brazilian cultural roots.
The duo’s repertoire spans several of Brazil’s most representative genres, including samba de roda, ijexá, baião, maracatu, and other traditional expressions linked to the African heritage. The result is a concert filled with rhythm, sensitivity, and creativity, inviting the audience on a genuine musical journey through the diverse regions of the South American country.
Profiles of the Artists
Pianist Kadija Teles began her musical training in Brazil and has established an impressive international career, performing in countries such as the United States, Finland, and Portugal. She is currently pursuing a doctoral research project on the relationship between Brazilian popular music and the African continent, a connection prominently featured in the Baião de Duas project.
Meanwhile, Aninha Paschoal began her artistic journey through capoeira and the study of Brazilian popular culture. Specialising in percussion and traditional rhythms, she has participated in numerous musical projects across Spain and Europe, becoming one of the most active advocates for genres such as forró, maracatu, and chorinho.
Celebrating a Decade of Cultural Exchange
This performance is a highlight of the Cool Moon Festival, which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary as a premier platform for intercultural exchange in the Canary Islands. Throughout June, the festival brings together artists from various countries and musical traditions, aiming to build bridges between Africa, Europe, and the Americas through culture.
With free admission until capacity is reached, the concert by Baião de Duas presents a unique opportunity to discover the richness of Brazilian music through a contemporary, intimate lens deeply connected to its roots.
