SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 4 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Cabildo is finalising the construction of the Las Charquetas reservoir in Guía de Isora, which will have a capacity of 250,000 cubic metres and a budget of €8.5 million. Its primary aim is to promote the reuse of treated wastewater from the Adeje-Arona wastewater treatment plant and, in the future, from the Western wastewater treatment plant.
The insular vice president, Lope Afonso, and the councillor for Primary Sector, Valentín González, visited the site, accompanied by government delegate Anselmo Pestano. They noted that this infrastructure will be “essential” for ensuring agricultural development in the southwest, according to a statement from the Cabildo.
Afonso has expressed his “very positive” assessment of the project’s upcoming completion, highlighting that it promotes water efficiency. This will enable a direct connection to all treated and reclaimed water systems in the area, effectively meeting the agricultural sector’s needs in the region.
SUPPORT FOR THE PRIMARY SECTOR
The initiative will be complemented by the implementation of a distribution network, impacting over 400 hectares of crops and more than 140 irrigators in the area.
The Cabildo is nearing completion of this project, which is primarily financed through Next Generation EU funds (80%), with the insular institution contributing 20%.
This initiative is part of the modernisation and improvement of the water systems in southwest Tenerife, executed by the Cabildo under an agreement between the public insular company BALTEN and the State Mercantile Company for Agricultural Infrastructures (SEIASA), part of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The total investment resulting from this agreement reaches €20 million, covering both the construction of the reservoir and the distribution of irrigation water in the region.
