Improvements Made to Pavements in La Laguna
Over the past month, the City Council of La Laguna has undertaken significant improvement and maintenance work on pavements in several streets, including Tabares de Cala, San Agustín, Viana, Bencomo, and Alcalde Alonso Suárez Melián.
The Department of Works, Infrastructure, and Accessibility has completed a series of restoration and rehabilitation tasks aimed at addressing minor breakages or damage identified in these areas. This deterioration has occurred primarily due to the passage of delivery vehicles and in intersections where road traffic is still permitted.
Key Developments in Tabares de Cala
Councillor Ángel Chinea, responsible for this department, explained that, “one of the major projects we have recently completed was on Tabares de Cala, specifically at the intersection with San Agustín. A more extensive intervention was required to lift the entire pavement in this section and carry out necessary repairs. Additionally, damaged valves and inspection covers have been replaced, and the base surface has been maintained with the installation of the final material.”
Phased Improvements for Minimal Disruption
Chinea also clarified that the comprehensive improvement project for this street has been divided into phases since the beginning of the year. This approach aims to minimise disruption to local residents and the daily traffic using this route. Consequently, the remaining work at the intersections of Tabares de Cala with Carrera and Herradores will be postponed until the summer months to coincide with the academic break.
Other Streets Included in the Project
Other streets included in this extensive restoration and repair plan are San Agustín, Viana, Alcalde Alonso Suárez Melián, Bencomo, and Obispo Rey Redondo (commonly known as Carrera). Work around the Plaza del Cristo has also been carried out for several months, addressing concerns raised by local residents and users of the market about some damaged slabs.
Future Plans for Pedestrian Streets
Lastly, Chinea reminded citizens that the City Council of La Laguna is progressing with a parallel strategy to further enhance the condition of pedestrian streets in the city. This involves analysing various alternative materials and conducting tests to achieve a more durable surface with improved resistance to vehicle traffic.
