SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 4 June (EUROPA PRESS) —
The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is finalising preparations to welcome the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV on June 12. This includes the distribution of 10,000 caps, 10,000 wristbands, and 10,000 commemorative fans, as well as 50,000 bottles of water to ensure attendees stay hydrated during the event.
Special Decorations for the Occasion
The city will also display a special image for the occasion, and throughout the planned route, welcome banners featuring Pope Leo XIV will be installed. The façade of the City Hall and one of the main entrances to the capital will feature large-format posters welcoming the Holy Father and the thousands of faithful and visitors arriving in Santa Cruz.
Moreover, the flower clock at García Sanabria Park and various municipal gardens will be decorated in the colours of the Vatican City, emphasising the symbolic and solemn nature of this historic visit.
Significance of the Event
José Manuel Bermúdez, the Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, highlighted the importance of this event for the city, asserting that it will be a “historic day” for Santa Cruz.
“We are working with utmost dedication to ensure the city is prepared for an event of this magnitude, providing exemplary hospitality and ensuring that residents and visitors can enjoy this unique moment in the best conditions,” he stated.
On his part, Councillor for Festivities, Javier Caraballero, noted the aim is for the entire city to partake in this “historic celebration.”
“We have prepared a special atmosphere throughout the route and at various strategic points in Santa Cruz so that the visit of Pope Leo XIV is felt in every corner of the capital and remains in everyone’s memory,” he added.
Economic and Promotional Impact
Carmen Dolores Hernández, Councillor for Employment, Commerce, and Tourism, emphasised the economic and promotional implications of the Pope’s presence.
“The visit of the Pope will provide a significant boost to the commercial, tourism, and service activities of our city. In addition to the institutional and social significance of the event, Santa Cruz will gain extraordinary international exposure, helping to strengthen its position as a destination capable of hosting major events,” she remarked.
Public Access Arrangements
For those unable to access the port area, the main venue for the religious celebration, the council will set up a giant screen with sound facilities in a nearby location, the final placement of which is awaiting technical confirmation, the City Council detailed in a statement.
This infrastructure will enable the public to watch the Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV live from a designated viewing area.
