Tenerife’s Gifts for Pope Leo XIV During His Upcoming Visit
Presentation of Gifts
On Thursday, the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, presented gifts to the Bishop of the Nivariense Diocese, Eloy Santiago. These gifts are to be sent from Tenerife to Pope Leo XIV in light of his forthcoming visit to the island. The ceremony took place during the announcement of the security measures put in place for the Pope’s visit.
Cultural Significance of the Gifts
According to the island institution, the chosen gifts include a ‘manta esperancera’ and an altar frontal crafted using traditional techniques of lacework and rosettes. These items represent “some of the most prominent expressions of the island’s cultural and artisan heritage,” they noted.
The altar frontal has been made by lace-maker Rosario Yumar Jacinto and rosette artisan Antonio Domingo Rodríguez Ruiz, both of whom attended the event to discuss the creation process and the significance of the piece. They explained that it “reflects the identity, tradition, and the knowledge passed down through generations in Tenerife.”
Symbol of Gratitude
The Cabildo emphasised that these gifts aim to “convey to the Holy Father a part of Tenerife’s soul,” as they represent “the history, traditions, and the craftsmanship of the island’s artisans.”
For the local institution, Pope Leo XIV’s visit is an event that “will forever remain in the collective memory of Tenerife,” with the gifts symbolising “the love, affection, and gratitude of the people of Tenerife towards the Pontiff.”
