Tenerife Cabildo Advances Water Supply Project for Agricultural Sector

The Cabildo of Tenerife has announced that it is in the final phase of constructing the Las Charquetas reservoir in the municipality of Guía de Isora. This hydraulic infrastructure aims to enhance the water supply for the agricultural sector in the southwest of the island.
Modernisation Initiative
This initiative is part of the “modernisation and improvement of the hydraulic systems in the region” project, which will have a direct impact on over 400 hectares of farmland and more than 140 irrigators, according to the local authority. The new reservoir is expected to have a storage capacity of 250,000 cubic metres of water and a height of 15 metres.
Project Budget
The project has a budget of €8.51 million and aims to promote the reuse of treated wastewater from the Adeje-Arona Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDAR) and, in a later phase, also from the Western EDAR.
Funding Sources
The Cabildo noted that 80% of the funding for this work is sourced from European Next Generation funds, with the remaining 20% contributed by the Cabildo of Tenerife. This project is being developed as part of an agreement between the public company BALTEN and the State Mercantile Company for Agricultural Infrastructure (SEIASA), which is under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
The Cabildo states that the total investment projected under this agreement amounts to €20 million and encompasses both the construction of the reservoir and the future irrigation water distribution network for the southwest of Tenerife.
