The Council of La Laguna has allocated €12,000 to support the University of La Laguna’s Formula Student project, which enables students to design and build an electric race car as part of their practical education.
Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez and Julio Brito, manager of the university’s general foundation, signed the agreement, along with Education and Youth Councillor Sergio Eiroa. The funding will cover technical components, specialised equipment, and additional resources necessary for developing the prototype and competing in university competitions.
Gutiérrez stated that this partnership showcases the Council’s commitment to local talent and projects that integrate knowledge, research, and innovation. He noted that La Laguna has a prominent university and aims to strengthen collaboration to provide students with real-world opportunities that also promote technological advancement and sustainable mobility.
Eiroa emphasised that this collaboration allows students to enhance their academic training with valuable practical experience, embracing teamwork and real challenges they will face in their careers. He added that Formula Student fosters a learning approach centred on innovation, effort, and problem-solving—values the Council seeks to support through initiatives that connect education with real labour market needs.
The project targets undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from various engineering and science disciplines at the University of La Laguna, encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to designing, building, and refining an electric car for international competitions.
The municipal funding will facilitate the acquisition of essential materials, electronic systems, mechanical components, and technical equipment to meet the technical and regulatory demands of the competitions entered by the team.
Through this initiative, the Council of La Laguna reaffirms its commitment to quality education linked to innovation, technological development, and sustainability, fostering collaboration between local government and the University of La Laguna to create opportunities for students and benefit society as a whole.
