Support for Emergency Health Technicians in La Laguna
A motion to support the Emergency Health Technicians (TES) of the Canary Islands will be presented at the next La Laguna Council meeting. Proposed by Saúl Alberola from the Unidas se Puede party, the motion aims to acknowledge the vital role these professionals play in urgent healthcare while calling for improvements to enhance the quality of ground ambulance services.
This initiative emerges amidst ongoing protests by the TES, who have long highlighted issues such as job insecurity, lack of professional recognition, and inadequacies affecting both their working conditions and service operations.
Alberola emphasised the importance of ensuring that emergency responders have the necessary resources and working conditions to provide effective care. “When an ambulance responds to an emergency, the public needs to know that those attending to them are properly equipped and recognised for their work,” he stated. “Supporting TES is about defending quality public healthcare.”
The motion requests the Council to officially back the TES and urges the Canary Islands Government to resume collective negotiations, grant professional recognition, improve working conditions, and expedite the new tender for ground ambulance services, incorporating quality, safety, and adequate funding.
Additionally, it calls for stricter oversight of operational bases, ambulance fleets, medical equipment, and workplace safety conditions, as well as a review of the Canary Emergency Service organisation to ensure adequate rest and shift changes for crews.
Alberola concluded, “The demands of the TES go beyond employment issues; they directly impact the care received by the public. Investing in better conditions for those who save lives leads to a safer, more effective, and compassionate healthcare system.”
