Public Sector Workers to Gain Extra Day Off in 2026
Public sector employees in Spain will have an extra paid day off, commonly referred to as a “moscoso”, in 2026. This change is due to the national holiday on 15 August falling on a Saturday.
Currently, the Basic Statute of Public Employees (EBEP) allows for six paid days off a year for personal reasons without the need to justify the absence. However, when a national holiday that cannot be substituted coincides with a weekend, an additional personal day can be added.
The decision to grant this extra day off is outlined in a resolution by the Secretary of State for Public Function, which officially regulates this allowance in 2026.
This adjustment aims to compensate for the lost holiday, making it easier for public sector workers to take needed breaks without impacting their salaries or social security contributions.
