Drive Safely in Spain: New Regulations for Drivers
In Spain, the Guardia Civil and the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) are tightening controls to improve road safety, particularly with summer travel approaching. Drivers must ensure they have all necessary documents while driving.
From 1 January 2026, drivers will be required to carry a V16 beacon instead of traditional warning triangles in the event of a breakdown or accident. This device should be stored in an accessible place, like the glove compartment, so it can be quickly used and positioned as high as possible on the immobilised vehicle. Failing to carry a V16 or using an unapproved model will result in an €80 fine.
The circulation permit, known as the “Permiso de Circulación,” is essential for all vehicle owners. The DGT states that this document demonstrates vehicle ownership, including special vehicles like agricultural and service vehicles. Drivers are legally obliged to carry this document, alongside their driving licence and vehicle inspection card (ITV), and present it when requested by authorities.
If a driver fails to produce their circulation permit, they face a €10 fine. An outdated permit incurs an €80 fine, while lacking a permit altogether can lead to penalties of up to €500.
In addition to the circulation permit, drivers must have the following documents in their vehicle:
- Driving licence
- Vehicle circulation permit
- Vehicle inspection card (ITV)
Lastly, while the circulation tax is mandatory for all registered vehicles, drivers are not required to carry proof of payment.
