Alert Issued for Wildfire Risk in Gran Canaria and Tenerife
The Canary Islands’ Emergency Management Directorate has declared a wildfire risk alert in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, effective from 8 am on Sunday, July 5. This precaution comes in response to an expected heatwave lasting several days.
The alert applies to Gran Canaria at altitudes above 400 metres and to the midlands and summits of southern and western Tenerife. This announcement follows the regional government’s implementation of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Response to Wildfires.
The heat is expected to peak on Sunday in the eastern islands, gradually spreading across the archipelago throughout the week, especially from Tuesday onwards.
Gran Canaria is forecast to experience maximum temperatures ranging from 34 to 36 degrees, with interior areas potentially reaching 38 degrees, particularly in the south and west, and around Tejeda on Monday.
In Tenerife, temperatures are anticipated to reach between 32 and 35 degrees in the midlands and southern areas, with a rising trend in the early days of the heatwave.
Additionally, forecasters note that temperature inversion levels will be between 400 and 500 metres in Gran Canaria and 500 to 700 metres in Tenerife. This weather pattern will create warm, dry air above the midlands and wooded areas, where humidity will drop below 30%. Moderate trade winds, with locally strong gusts, are also expected, along with a slight dust intrusion over the eastern islands.
