A Heartfelt Tribute to San Benito in La Laguna

The vibrant celebrations of San Benito in La Laguna evoke cherished memories for many locals. A recent homage highlighted the emotional significance of this annual event, cementing its place in the community’s heart.

Reflecting on his childhood, a local resident shared how the San Benito festivities and the Corpus Christi celebrations shaped his early years. The streets of La Laguna transformed into stunning displays of floral artistry, crafted by loving hands. The smell of flowers filled the air, enhancing the solemnity of the occasion.

As a child, he recalls participating as an altar server during the Corpus Christi procession, marking it as a day of immense joy. He would walk alongside others, feeling a deep sense of importance, especially when treading on the beautiful floral carpets that adorned the streets.

Military presence during the early years added to the occasion’s gravity, their respect underscoring the procession’s sanctity. After the main event, all the brotherhoods gathered at the Cathedral, where the day culminated before returning home.

The taste of sweet potato and cinnamon pastries from local stalls remains a fond memory, symbolising the small joys that linger in memory. Over the years, his life journey led him back to La Laguna, where he contributed to creating the very floral carpets he once admired.

This deep connection to the city fostered his musical passions. Influenced by family and community, he began learning guitar chords, immersing himself in the oral tradition of Canarian folk music. His early musical endeavors formed the foundation of his artistic journey.

Today, as he stands as the official announcer for the San Benito festival, he acknowledges the legacy of those who have preserved the island’s musical heritage. Music is inseparable from the celebrations, embodying the local culture and drawing generations together.

He urges gratitude for those who have helped keep the spirit of San Benito alive, ensuring it remains a vibrant testament to the community’s identity. The heart of La Laguna will continue to beat through its traditions, its songs, and its deep-rooted pride.

“Long live San Benito! Long live La Laguna!” he declares, capturing the essence of the celebrations and the enduring spirit of the people.
