Launch of ‘Operation Prometeo 2026’ in Tenerife to Prevent Forest Fires
LA LAGUNA, TENERIFE – Tenerife’s President Rosa Dávila officially launched ‘Operation Prometeo 2026’ on Wednesday, aimed at monitoring and preventing forest fires during the island’s highest-risk months.
The event took place at the Engineers Barracks in La Cuesta and included the Chief of Staff of the Canary Army Command, Alfonso Pardo de Santayana Galbis, as well as other military and civilian leaders involved in the operation.
Dávila outlined the military’s role in supporting the Cabildo with monitoring and prevention in the areas most vulnerable to wildfires. She emphasised that the operation is a vital tool for protecting Tenerife’s natural heritage and ensuring public safety. “The best way to fight a fire is to prevent it,” she stated, highlighting the importance of proactive measures and cooperation between authorities.
This year’s campaign features enhanced technology, including drones for surveillance, alongside 24-hour ground patrols operating in strategic areas, particularly near protected natural sites.
Running from July 1 to September 30, the operation will conduct preventive patrols in high-risk areas. Dávila praised the collaboration with the Army, stating it enhances the island’s response capacity and safety.
The event concluded with Dávila presenting official patches of ‘Operation Prometeo 2026’ to military leaders and saw the ceremonial departure of the first convoy to the forests, marking the start of the new surveillance campaign.
