Funding Extension for Canary Islands Due to Iran Conflict
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2 Jul. – The Spanish and Canary Islands governments have secured an additional €23.1 million to continue compensations for the effects of the Iran conflict, extending support for another three months.
Following discussions between Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister for Territorial Policy, and Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Canary Islands, along with officials from the Treasury Ministry, a new compensation amount of €7.8 million will be added to the existing €15.3 million from a previous decree.
The announcement was made during a presentation at the Government’s headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Clavijo described the deal as “positive” and “just,” acknowledging the unique challenges faced by the islands. He expressed gratitude for the central government’s willingness to address the inequalities experienced by Canarians.
Minister Torres confirmed that the additional funds, approved by the Council of Ministers last Monday, will be formally transferred. This funding aims to support measures such as fuel subsidies, reductions in the indirect tax (IGIC), and aid for the primary sector and transport, totalling over €60 million in related costs. The new measures will be in effect until 30 September.
