Tributes will be paid to the renowned architect Federico García Barba, who passed away last year, during a ceremony on 2nd July at 7.00 PM. The event, hosted by the Official College of Architects of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro, along with the Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts, aims to celebrate his significant contributions to architecture, urbanism, and cultural heritage in the Canary Islands.
García Barba played a vital role in shaping the architectural and territorial landscape of the Canary Islands. Known for his keen perspective on the city, landscape, and heritage, he approached his work with a blend of rigour, sensitivity, and commitment to Canarian culture.
Colleagues and friends, including Catalina García Trujillo, Pedro Domínguez Anadón, and current COA Dean María Nieves Febles, will share insights into his professional and personal legacy at the tribute. This occasion will also spotlight García Barba’s innovative approach to architecture, which went beyond traditional standards, allowing him to showcase and explain the uniqueness of the Canaries through his work.
García Barba was instrumental in advancing cultural discussions during his tenure as director of the magazine BASA from 1987 to 1990, where he promoted numerous debates and activities. His impact on a generation of architects is evident in his writings.
He actively contributed to the Urbanism Commission and led the Group of Urban Architects. His dedication to the profession was further recognised in 2007 when he joined the Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts as a full member.
Born in Barcelona, García Barba’s illustrious career included notable projects such as the Casa de Los Laureles in Tacoronte, which received the Oraá Architecture Mention in 1985, and the rehabilitation of Casa Monteverde in La Laguna, awarded an architecture mention in 1993. He also contributed to significant plans for Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna, and worked on heritage protection documents, reshaping perceptions of Canarian territory.
