SUNA 2000: Leading the Way in Composting and Recycling in the Canary Islands

In 1998, Aurelio Rodríguez launched SUNA 2000 in Arona, marking a significant step forward in composting and organic waste management in the Canary Islands, where such infrastructure was almost non-existent. Now, more than 25 years later, SUNA 2000 sustains over a hundred farms, restoring soil health across the region. The company, now managed by a second generation, continues to blend its foundational experience with modern innovations.

In an interview, CEO Román Rodríguez highlighted the company’s evolution. He explained that their journey began with a legacy of farming in Guía de Isora. As the quality of their farms deteriorated, Aurelio sought solutions through composting, addressing both soil productivity and waste management.

A key milestone for SUNA 2000 was its influence on the first waste management law in the Canary Islands, which was inspired by its operational practices. This set a precedent for regularising waste management across the archipelago.

The transition to the new generation has introduced fresh ideas in research and development, institutional relations, and investments, all while adapting to workforce challenges. They aim to uphold environmental standards in line with new regulations.

Rodríguez views leading a pioneering recycling company in the fragmented Canarian landscape as a significant responsibility. SUNA 2000 is committed to quality in waste management and compost production, with a strict process for separating unsuitable materials.

Each year, the company processes about 25,000 tonnes of waste, making a considerable environmental impact by reducing carbon footprints and supporting ecological initiatives. This work nurtures the soil of numerous farms, reinforcing sustainable practices in the region.

Looking ahead, SUNA 2000 continues to focus on safety, technology advancements, and environmental stewardship, with several new projects underway to enhance its role in the ongoing development of the Canary Islands.
