San Benito Romería Celebrates Local Tradition

The San Benito Romería in La Laguna has become one of the region’s most significant popular festivals. Initially a modest neighbourhood celebration, it has evolved into a vibrant event that represents the entire island’s agricultural heritage.

Over the years, the festival’s organisation has strengthened, gradually expanding from a village gathering to a robust island celebration. Today, it attracts participants from across Tenerife, showcasing traditional music, dance, and costumes, creating a joyful atmosphere during the summer months. What began as a local event is now a regional highlight, reflecting the enduring spirit and traditions of the island’s communities.

La Laguna’s rich history contributes to the festival’s success. Once a capital city, it has maintained a neutral and esteemed status throughout historical conflicts. Its geographical charm, blending rural and urban landscapes, enhances the welcoming nature of the festival, making it a quintessential representation of Canarian culture.

The growing popularity of the San Benito Romería reflects a collective desire to preserve and celebrate local identity in an increasingly globalised world. It stands as a testament to the community’s pride in its heritage, emphasising the importance of tradition amidst modern influences. Through events like this, the people of La Laguna honour their ancestors by showcasing the unique customs and traditions that define their island.
