The San Joaquín football pitch in the La Salud district remains without electricity supply, although Santa Cruz de Tenerife Council claims necessary actions have been taken and the project is progressing. This community sports facility is part of a municipal improvement plan unveiled in June, with an investment exceeding €45,000.
The council’s response to a recent inquiry from Socialist councillor Elena Mateo Morales clarifies that the Sports Service has completed its required procedures. The project is now awaiting validation from Endesa before a new supply contract can be formalised, leaving no specific date for the power activation yet.
The issue gained attention after Mateo Morales questioned the fulfilment of commitments regarding the facility. The Sports Service insists progress is being made, but it is dependent on an external process keeping the pitch without a permanent solution.
Previously, on June 17, the council announced plans for an investment of €41,879.14 for two new public toilets, along with €3,500 for painting and upgrading benches and walls. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated these improvements would enhance the sports infrastructure for the community, creating more comfortable and accessible spaces for sport and neighbourhood interaction.
Councillor Alicia Cebrián highlighted that these upgrades would improve the pitch’s functionality and image as part of the city’s maintenance strategy for sports facilities. Zaida González, the councillor for the Salud-La Salle district, emphasised the social and sporting role of San Joaquín, noting its importance for local clubs, players, and families. However, the lack of lighting continues to hinder its normal operation during evening hours, even as the council promises improvements without setting clear timelines.
