Tenerife is set to become an international fitness hub this September, hosting its first-ever HYROX event from 4th to 6th at the Santa Cruz Fairgrounds. The competition, which has surged in popularity worldwide, is expected to attract around 10,000 athletes from over 100 countries, with an estimated 20,000 attendees including participants, supporters, and spectators.
Originating in Germany in 2017, HYROX features a challenging format of eight kilometres of running interspersed with eight functional workout stations, all executed in a standardised sequence. This consistency across locations allows athletes to benchmark their performance globally. Unlike many fitness competitions, HYROX is open to everyone, requiring no qualifiers or time limits, making it accessible for both professional and amateur athletes.
This Tenerife edition is particularly significant as it marks the first time HYROX will take place in the Canary Islands, expanding its reach beyond mainland Spanish cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Registrations are nearly full, with data indicating that nine out of ten participants will come from outside the island, and about 60% will be international.
HYROX is more than just a race; it transforms the venue into a festive celebration of sports, featuring activities, brand showcases, and community events. Tenerife’s appeal as a host city lies in its excellent flight connections, stable climate, diverse accommodation options, and opportunities for outdoor activities post-competition.
The event is anticipated to bring a significant economic boost to Tenerife, attracting families, coaches, and fitness fans who will stay on the island for several days. Last season alone, HYROX brought together over 100,000 athletes in Spain and Portugal, continuing to expand with over 150 events globally.
Importantly, HYROX promotes inclusivity; it welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels without entry restrictions. This ethos encourages all athletes to compete at their own pace, exemplified by the participation of people over 60 in some events.
As Tenerife embraces this vibrant fitness culture, it will become a focal point for thousands united by their passion for challenging their limits in one of the world’s most popular fitness competitions.
