The Gando Air Base in the Canary Islands has officially transitioned to the Eurofighter Typhoon, marking the end of the F-18’s operational phase. The ceremony, presided over by Air Force Chief of Staff General Francisco Braco Carbó, included military and civilian officials.
Colonel Bayardo Abós, head of the base, praised the commitment of the forces, stating, “Just as you’ve maintained operational levels until the last day of the F-18, you will now do the same with the Eurofighter.” General Francisco Javier Vidal of the Canary Air Command highlighted the significance of this change, asserting the Eurofighters will serve Spain and its people in their mission to protect the islands.
The event featured an aerial display of the new interceptor above Gando Bay, celebrating a major upgrade to the island’s defence capabilities. The 46th Wing will gradually expand its fleet to 20 Eurofighters. Following this transition, the last six operational F-18s will be transferred to Zaragoza Air Base and will be decommissioned in December.
The introduction of the Eurofighter is part of a strategic plan initiated in 2022, which required updates to critical infrastructure and intensive training for pilots and support staff to ensure full operational capacity.
Having previously participated in missions since 2010, the Eurofighter now becomes the primary defence system for the 46th Wing, enhancing immediate response capabilities in this crucial geostrategic area.
The 46th Wing is the main unit at Gando and plays a pivotal role in air defence and logistical support in the Canary Islands, with two groups focused on air defence and search and rescue operations year-round.
