Surge in Public Transport Use in Anaga Park
Public transport usage in the Anaga Rural Park has risen by 59% over the last three years, increasing from 300,000 passengers to over 478,000 by 2025, according to the Cabildo of Tenerife.
The Cabildo also reported a 38% increase in service capacity, with available slots rising from 1.3 million to 1.8 million. The distance covered by public transport has grown 18%, from 555,000 kilometres earlier this year to 651,000 last year.
This boost in public transport is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing mobility through road improvements, safety measures, and future plans for park-and-ride facilities and shuttle services.
Since 2023, over €16.2 million has been allocated to initiatives related to mobility, infrastructure maintenance, road enhancements, and environmental protection. In 2026, €1.8 million will be spent on safety improvements to the Anaga road network, including surface rehabilitation and upgraded signage.
Sustainable Mobility Strategy
The Sustainable Mobility Strategy for Anaga Park, open to public participation and feedback, includes 24 measures and 68 specific actions designed to manage access and reduce reliance on private vehicles in this protected area.
The strategy consists of eight focus areas: management of private vehicles and parking; control of motorised access and capacity; public transport; active mobility including walking and cycling; digitalisation; mobility promotion; public space enhancement; and institutional coordination.
Among its initiatives, the strategy will see a comprehensive reorganisation of regular public transportation. Changes will be made after assessing footpaths and their capacity to ensure the public transport service meets demand effectively.
Once the participatory process is complete, the Cabildo plans to establish a Mobility Committee for the Anaga Biosphere Reserve to coordinate the implementation of these measures.
