A Celebration of Faith: The San Benito Pilgrimage in La Laguna
The annual pilgrimage in honour of San Benito Abad took place once again in La Laguna, celebrating the island’s agricultural heritage. This vibrant event was marked by colourful costumes, singing, and dancing, drawing locals together in a joyful display of faith.
San Benito Abad was first declared the protector of the Tenerife farmers nearly 500 years ago during a serious drought that threatened their crops. Historical accounts from 1540 describe how the locals elected him as their patron saint, establishing two annual processions in his honour.
Participants gathered to pay homage with offerings of fruits from their fields, expressing gratitude for good harvests. Most attendees dressed in traditional outfits, joyfully dancing and singing as they made their way to the ermita (chapel) atop La Laguna, a tradition that strengthens their community bond.
A proposal emerged last year to forgo the festivities due to a poor agricultural season, but the pilgrimage went ahead. On the day of the procession, unexpected rain revitalised the fields, reinforcing the importance of faith and tradition for the locals.
The San Benito Romería stands out as a true representation of Tenerife’s cultural identity. It blends spirituality with celebration, showcasing the island’s rich customs and a deep-rooted devotion to the land and its bounty. As described recently by a local writer, participating in this event offers a unique glimpse into the island’s heritage, making it a can’t-miss occasion.
