Canaries Offer Support for Venezuelan Crisis
The Canary Islands government has proposed sending up to 19 specialised professionals to aid in the emergency response in Venezuela. This offer, aimed at supporting international efforts, will be forwarded to the National Centre for Emergencies (CENEM), which will coordinate with the European Civil Protection Mechanism to assess and mobilise the necessary resources.
The Canarian Emergency Directorate has liaised with professional associations to compile a list of available specialists for potential deployment. The proposed team includes five forensic doctors (two anthropologists and three pathologists), three architects, three psychologists, and eight social workers.
While the proposal sets a maximum of 19 professionals, the final number and roles will be determined by the Civil Protection Directorate, in collaboration with CENEM and the other autonomous communities, based on the situation on the ground in Venezuela.
If activated, the team will operate under a single command in accordance with guidance from Venezuelan authorities. The Canary government has ensured that logistics for accommodation and sustenance will be arranged via the Canarian Houses in Venezuela, with team members bringing their personal items, protective equipment, and basic supplies needed for their work.
Forensic specialists will assist with victim identification and medical examinations, while architects will conduct initial evaluations of building conditions. Psychologists will provide psychological first aid and support to both the affected population and intervention teams. Social workers will assess urgent needs, identify vulnerable individuals, and facilitate access to resources for the impacted communities.
