Public transport is increasingly important for mobility within the Anaga Rural Park. Over the past three years, services in this natural area have seen a 59% rise in passenger numbers, jumping from 300,000 users in early 2023 to over 478,000 in 2025. This growth reflects a shift in how visitors access one of Tenerife’s most treasured natural sites.
During a recent council session, Eulalia García, the island’s Mobility Councillor, highlighted the efforts made by the Cabildo, along with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna councils, to enhance public transport in the park.
The number of available seats has increased from 1.3 million to 1.8 million in just three years, marking a 38% rise in capacity. Additionally, the distance covered by services has risen by 18%, from 555,000 km in early 2023 to 651,000 km last year.
Funding for public transport improvements is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing mobility alongside road safety and access management. The Cabildo of Tenerife has allocated over €16.2 million since 2023 to initiatives related to mobility, infrastructure maintenance, road improvements, and environmental protection. This year alone, tasks worth €1.8 million will focus on road safety enhancements in Anaga.
García also discussed the Sustainable Mobility Strategy for Anaga Rural Park, which will be shared with local associations for input before its final approval. The strategy proposes 24 measures and 68 specific actions aimed at managing access and easing pressure from private vehicles in the protected area.
Furthermore, the plan outlines eight strategic lines, including managing private vehicle access, enhancing public transport, promoting active travel, and fostering digital management.
Following community consultation and final document approval, the Cabildo will establish the Anaga Biosphere Reserve Mobility Table, a body designed to coordinate efforts among various administrations and continuously assess the implementation of proposed measures.
“We’re aware there’s much work to do. We will continue to work closely with local councils, security forces, and the residents of Anaga to advance towards a mobility model that enhances their quality of life while preserving this valuable natural space,” concluded García.
