Fifty Migrants Rescued Off Lanzarote
In the early hours of Saturday, 50 migrants were rescued from a small inflatable boat in waters near Lanzarote. The rescue operation, conducted by Salvamento Marítimo, followed a distress call made by the Army Air Corps, which spotted the vessel flying towards the island.
On Thursday afternoon, the air surveillance team alerted the Maritime Rescue Centre in Las Palmas about the boat’s whereabouts. The patrol vessel, salvamar Acrux, was dispatched, and nearby ships were notified to assist. One vessel, the Anemos, located the boat about a mile away and reported that it appeared to be in good condition. They were instructed to escort the migrants until the rescue unit arrived.
The rescue took place around 10:25 PM that evening, with all individuals on board identified as male migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa. They reached the port of Arrecife at approximately 1:22 AM, where they received medical attention from the Canary Island Health Service and the Red Cross.
