Safety Warning for Summer Swimmers in Canary Islands
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 27 June – The Association for Drowning Prevention, ‘Canarias, 1500 km de Costa’, has released its annual safety guidelines aimed at preventing drownings this summer.
The organisation calls for “responsibility and common sense” when enjoying the sea. They highlight key risks, such as swimming when the red flag is raised, being caught in a rip current, or going to unguarded beaches. These factors significantly compromise swimmers’ safety.
With summer commencing, millions of beachgoers flock to Spain’s coast. Authorities warn that recklessness due to overconfidence or ignorance can lead to drownings and other accidents in various water bodies. Knowing how to respond in emergencies is crucial to reducing drowning incidents.
Nine Key Safety Tips for a Secure Summer:
Respect the Red Flag: Swimming when a red flag is displayed is the primary cause of drowning. This flag indicates swimming is prohibited.
Avoid Rip Currents: These currents can pull swimmers out to sea. Don’t fight the current; conserve energy, stay calm, and signal for help.
Be Cautious on Unguarded Beaches: Swimming in areas without lifeguards increases drowning risks. Always check if lifeguards are present.
Use Safety Gear When Fishing: If fishing in rocky areas, always check weather conditions and use appropriate safety gear, including a helmet and life jacket.
No Selfies Near Cliffs: Taking selfies, especially near cliffs or during rough weather, can lead to accidents. The urge for the perfect shot can increase risks.
Inflatable Toys Aren’t Life-Savers: Inflatable floats are toys, not safety devices. Supervise children closely and ensure they’re in safe flotation devices.
Watch Out for Inexperienced Jet Skiers: When participating in water sports, maintain a safe distance from swimmers. Many jet ski operators lack proper training.
Dive with Caution: Always dive with a buddy and ensure your equipment is safe. Recognise your physical limits.
Practice Safe Sun and Water Entry: After heavy meals or prolonged sun exposure, enter the water gradually and use high-factor sunscreen.
By following these guidelines, beachgoers can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience along the stunning Canarian coastline.
