Canary Islands Government Awaiting Updates on Missing Citizens in Venezuela
The spokesperson for the Canary Islands Government, Alfonso Cabello, confirmed on Saturday that authorities are still “waiting” for more information regarding the significant number of Canarians reported missing in Venezuela.
Speaking to Televisión Canaria, Cabello expressed his hope that the missing individuals might be found alive, although there have been no new updates. “We see rescues happening unexpectedly, but we are still awaiting more communication from the Directorate General of Consulates,” he noted.
In regard to humanitarian assistance, Cabello urged caution among the Canary Island community in gathering medicines and food. He explained that this aid will ultimately be coordinated by neighbouring countries. “The International Coordination Centre is active and will address on-the-ground needs,” he said.
The Canary Islands Government has also initiated donation centres across its 22 entities in Venezuela to distribute aid to the most affected areas. Additionally, Cabello mentioned ongoing efforts to assess the needs of the Canary Islands community in Venezuela, particularly in sourcing any specific medications that may be required quickly. “We are continuously analysing the situation and maintaining ongoing conversations with relevant entities,” he added.
