Boluda Shipping has unveiled two new Ship to Shore (STS) cranes and four hybrid Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes in Tenerife, enhancing its operational capacity. The event featured Javier Climent, the company’s director general, alongside Pedro Suárez López de Vergara, president of the Port Authority of Tenerife, and Antolín Goya from the State Coordinating Entity of Maritime Workers and Port Stevedores.
Climent highlighted that the new cranes will enable Boluda to accommodate larger vessels, such as Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV), and strengthen Tenerife’s position as a hub for high-volume shipping. Suárez noted that this investment reflects private operators’ confidence in the port’s future and is crucial for boosting terminal efficiency.
The latest STS cranes integrate cutting-edge technology to ensure safe and efficient operations, allowing precise cargo handling. Boluda added that this strategic development presents opportunities for major shipping companies reconfiguring their European routes via the Cape of Good Hope, making Santa Cruz de Tenerife a pivotal stop.
The STS cranes have impressive capabilities, including a reach of 22 containers across, a maximum lift height of 60 metres, and a lifting capacity of 88 tonnes. They are designed to handle both containerised cargo and oversized items sustainably, with advanced energy recovery systems that reduce their carbon footprint.
Additionally, the four new RTG cranes from Konecranes are already operational, significantly increasing container storage capabilities while enhancing loading and unloading efficiency. These cranes are praised for their sustainability and fast operation, optimising the flow of goods and reducing wait times. Overall, this revamp promises to improve the terminal’s global efficiency.
