Public Transport Use in Anaga Park Surges by 59%
The number of public transport users in Tenerife’s Anaga Rural Park has increased by 59% over the last three years. Last year alone saw over 478,000 passengers, up from 300,000 at the beginning of 2023, according to the Tenerife Cabildo. This rise is attributed to efforts to lessen the impact of private vehicles in the protected area.
Eulalia García, the island’s mobility councillor, stated that the increase reflects a shift in how visitors access this natural space. She praised the Cabildo’s collaboration with the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna to enhance the bus network serving the area.
Increased Capacity and Routes
The expansion of regular bus lines has led to significant growth in capacity and distance covered in the archipelago:
Seating Availability: The number of seats offered has risen from 1.3 million to 1.8 million in the last three years, marking a 38% increase.
Distance Travelled: Routes have expanded by 18%, with kilometres travelled increasing from 555,000 at the start of 2023 to 651,000 last year.
Since 2023, the Cabildo has also invested over €16.2 million in mobility-related projects, including infrastructure conservation, road safety improvements, and environmental protection. This year alone, they are executing €1.8 million in projects to enhance road safety in Anaga through resurfacing, stabilisation of slopes, and sign renewal.
Sustainable Mobility Strategy
García spoke about the Sustainable Mobility Strategy for Anaga Rural Park, which outlines 24 measures and 68 specific actions aimed at regulating access and reducing private vehicle pressure. The strategy is open for input from local associations before final approval.
It includes eight strategic lines covering private vehicle management, parking control, active mobility, digitalisation, and regular public transport. After the participatory process and final document approval, the Cabildo will establish the Anaga Biosphere Reserve Mobility Table to coordinate implementation and monitor these measures.
