Tenerife Celebrates LGBTIQA+ Pride with Commitment to Inclusion
The Tenerife Cabildo marked World LGBTIQA+ Pride Day by reading a manifesto that underscores its dedication to equality, diversity, and human rights. The event took place on June 25 in Santa Cruz, with the island’s president Rosa Dávila and other officials in attendance.
Dávila emphasised the importance of the rainbow flag flying at the Cabildo, stating, “It’s a declaration of principles. Tenerife is open, respectful, proud, and free.” She assured that the Cabildo would protect LGBTIQA+ rights and oppose any rollback of progress made. This year, the Cabildo approved Tenerife’s first Strategic Framework for LGBTIQA+ Support, designed to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity through concrete measures.
Patricia León, the island’s Director of Equality and Diversity, expressed the Cabildo’s commitment to becoming a safe, respectful environment. She warned against giving ground to any discourse undermining human rights.
In celebration, the Cabildo and La Orotava’s council will host the ‘Festivalullo’ on June 27. The event, themed ‘Diverse Pride, Shared Voices’, will take place at Plaza del V Centenario from 8pm to 1.30am, featuring performances by local artists and offering sign language interpretation.
Additionally, participants are encouraged to join the island’s first LGBTIQA+ pride march in La Orotava on Saturday, starting at 6pm from Parque Cultural Doña Chana, ending at the Town Hall with a manifesto reading.
