Canary Islands Government Plans Support for Earthquake Victims in Venezuela
The government of the Canary Islands is mobilising assistance for those affected by two recent earthquakes in Venezuela, which have resulted in at least 164 fatalities and nearly 1,000 injuries.
Alfonso Cabello, the government’s spokesperson, announced that a series of meetings have been scheduled with various island organisations in Venezuela, including the Federation of Canary Islands Associations (Fecai) and local parliamentary representatives. These discussions aim to coordinate an effective aid plan.
Following a meeting with security and emergency services, Cabello reported that they have managed to connect with 17 of the 22 Canary Island organisations based in Venezuela, although detailed information remains limited. A virtual meeting is set for 2:00 PM today to gather further updates.
He expressed the government’s ongoing concern and sadness about the situation, noting that uncertainties still outweigh known facts. Cabello indicated that there are fears among residents, particularly in the heavily affected area of La Guaira, where numerous aftershocks have prompted many to leave their homes.
Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo has already reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to offer support and has conveyed a message of solidarity to Canary Islanders and their families in Venezuela.
With around 70,000 Canary residents in the country, the local community in the islands is also anxious about their relatives there.
