Weekend Events Celebrate Local Heritage in Tenerife
Two traditional events will take place in southern Tenerife this weekend, focusing on the cultural memories of the people in Fasnia and Santiago del Teide.
The event in Fasnia, organised by the Montañeros de Uzapa group, is set for Saturday. It involves a three-kilometre trek at nearly 1,000 metres above sea level, ending in the village of Archifira. Participants will experience the long-standing tradition of transhumance, which reflects the journey from the coast to the mountains in search of fresh pastures for livestock. This tenth edition of the route will feature characters dressed in period costumes, bringing the mid-20th-century practices to life.
Yesterday, the town hall hosted the event’s launch, showcasing photos of locals who participated in the tradition and announcing the release of the second edition of the book La Mudá, costumbre de un pueblo.
On Sunday, Santiago del Teide will hold the Al paso de la cumbre event. Participants, including farmers dressed in nearly century-old attire, will honour the generations of Canarians who relied on rural paths for food through product exchange.
Meeting points for this event are set for San Francisco de La Montañeta (Garachico) at 10:00, San José de Los Llanos (El Tanque) at 11:30, and Santiago del Teide square at 13:30.
