Emergency Team Assists Home Birth in Los Realejos
An emergency medical team from the Canary Islands’ Health Service (SUC) successfully assisted in a home birth in Los Realejos, Tenerife, early on June 24.
The emergency services received a call notifying them that a woman had given birth at home. The SUC coordinator assessed both the mother and baby over the phone and provided guidance for the immediate post-birth period.
Confirming both were well, the coordinator dispatched an advanced life support ambulance to the residence to evaluate their condition in person. Upon arrival, a team consisting of a doctor, a nurse, and a paramedic checked on the mother and newborn. They found both stable and completed the delivery by safely expelling the placenta.
The father was actively involved, cutting the umbilical cord under the team’s guidance. After ensuring both were in good health, the ambulance crew prepared them for transport to the hospital, following specific protocols for such cases.
Meanwhile, the emergency coordinators liaised with the Obstetrics, Midwifery, and Gynaecology departments at the relevant hospital to ensure continued care. Both the mother and her baby were then transferred safely to receive specialised attention.
