Investment by Cabildo de Tenerife
The Cabildo de Tenerife will invest €3.3 million in the landscaping regeneration of the slope located next to Mercatenerife, on the right bank of the TF-1. The project will have an execution period of eight months and will cover a real area of 64,778 square metres.
The area is situated at one of the main road entrances to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, adjacent to the wholesale food distribution complex. According to the island corporation, the space is currently in a degraded state, with the presence of invasive vegetation, debris, and substrate loss due to water erosion.
Although the surface area is approximately 54,000 square metres, the steep slope increases the actual intervention area. The project aims to stabilise the slope, reduce the risk of material collapse, and enhance the appearance of a highly visible point for those accessing the capital from the southern part of the island.
Project alongside the TF-1
The island’s Primary Sector councillor, Valentín González, visited the site accompanied by the manager of Mercatenerife, Alejandro Fernández.
During the visit, González noted that the intervention addresses a longstanding demand related to road safety and slope stabilisation in this section of the Southern motorway.
The councillor also emphasised that the project will dignify one of the main entry points to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, combining the landscape recovery of the area with improved safety conditions alongside the road.
Removal of Invasive Species and Environmental Recovery
The project includes the management of a degraded space caused by material accumulation, soil loss, and the presence of invasive plant species.
The intervention will reduce the visual impact of the slope and correct issues associated with erosion, which are particularly significant in steep terrains vulnerable to material displacement from rainfall.
Mercatenerife and its Investment Plan
The work coincides with a broader investment programme in Mercatenerife, a key infrastructure for the wholesale distribution of agri-food products in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
According to the Cabildo, the entity will execute a total of €4,948,000 this year through its Plan of Actions, Investments, and Financing, nearly five million allocated to various activities within the complex.
González placed the regeneration of the slope within this investment rollout, aimed at reinforcing Mercatenerife’s role as a logistical centre in the Canary Islands with a focus on efficiency and sustainability.
Over €12 million in Three Years
The councillor for the Primary Sector indicated that investments made in Mercatenerife over the last three years have exceeded €12 million.
This development reflects a process of modernising the facilities and adapting the complex to new operational, environmental, and safety requirements.
During this period, the entity has promoted actions related to infrastructure improvements, energy efficiency, accessibility, control, and sustainability.
