Pope Leo XIV and part of the ecclesiastical delegation have departed from Tenerife en route to Rome, experiencing a delay of approximately three hours due to technical issues with the Iberia aircraft. They boarded the Falcon provided by King Felipe VI.
The monarch travelled to the island specifically to attend the closure of the papal visit to Spain. According to sources from Zarzuela reported to Europa Press, he will remain on the island for a few more hours while awaiting the arrival of another aircraft, which is operated by pilots from Wing 45.
King Felipe VI accompanied the Pope to the aircraft, crossing the entire runway alongside ministers Ángel Víctor Torres and Elma Sáiz, as well as the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo. They spent around 90 minutes in an adjacent building after the technical problem with the first flight was detected.
The remaining passengers from the initial flight, mainly members of the Vatican delegation and journalists, were disembarked from the first aircraft. The airline has arranged another flight departing from Madrid to ensure they can travel to Rome on the same day.
