Pedro Sánchez to Join Pope Leo XIV for Meeting with Migrants in Gran Canaria

The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, will accompany Pope Leo XIV for a meeting with migrants, workers, and volunteers who assist them at the harbour in Arguineguín, Gran Canaria, on Thursday, 11 June, starting at 11:40.

This engagement is part of the pontiff’s agenda in the Canary Islands, with the port of Arguineguín being a focal point of the visit due to its connection to the migration realities of the archipelago. Various reports regarding the trip indicate that this event will take place during Pope Leo XIV’s tour of Spain from 6 to 12 June.

Alongside Sánchez will be the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Parliamentary Relations, Félix Bolaños; the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres; and the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, who is also the Government Spokesperson, Elma Saiz.

Reception at Gando Airbase

Prior to the meeting in Arguineguín, the head of the Government will welcome Pope Leo XIV at the Gando Airbase in Gran Canaria, at 10:50.

Also present at this reception will be the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, and the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres.

The pontiff’s visit to the Canary Islands will focus significantly on the migration situation in the Islands, featuring an event in southern Gran Canaria where migrants, along with representatives and workers from hosting organisations, will participate. According to information from EFE, over a thousand migrants from Latin America and Africa will accompany the Pope in Arguineguín.
