The Centre for Initiatives and Tourism of the Southern Comarca of Tenerife (CIT Sur), an association comprising individuals, businesses, and organisations aimed at promoting progress in the southern region of the island, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The milestone will be marked with a gala at the Infanta Leonor Auditorium in Los Cristianos on Friday, 3rd July at 20:00.
This event will gather 800 guests and will honour the businesses, entities, and professionals who have driven the growth of tourism in the southern comarca. Attendees can expect a documentary presentation that showcases the evolution of the region overall and within individual municipalities.
Sixty years after the historic founding meeting held in 1966 at the Médano Hotel, the current president of CIT Sur, Rafael Dolado, emphasises the crucial role played by “those who envisioned development where others merely saw barren landscapes, and those who championed planning, professionalisation, and tourism promotion as axes of progress.”
Upcoming Challenges
Furthermore, Dolado notes that the gala will not only reflect on the past but also assess the current situation of the comarca, projecting short-, medium-, and long-term challenges as a destination of “quality, sustainability, and prestige.”
He highlights the “repositioning” of CIT Sur with a new strategic plan aimed at reaffirming its commitment to a sustainable, competitive, and excellent tourism model, aligned with new market trends and the necessity to preserve the identity, environment, and quality of life of the territory.
The southern entity will expand the advisory services it provides to its members and enhance its training and business support efforts. Additionally, it plans to undertake commercial missions to other national and international destinations, as announced by its president.
Year-Round Activities
CIT Sur hosts various activities throughout the year that have resonated with the local population, including the historic programme “Kindness, Tourism, Your Future” with schools and colleges.
The organisation also rewards the most loyal tourists who have chosen the South for their holidays for decades, helps to raise awareness of World Tourism Day, as well as Canary Islands Day, at Reina Sofía Airport, and provides support for major festivals in the municipalities.
