Enhancements at Las Canteras Beach to Improve Safety and Accessibility
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has introduced new equipment at Las Canteras Beach this week, aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and the quality of services at the capital’s main beach. The investment, amounting to €111,141, has been financed by the Presidency Department of the Gran Canaria Cabildo.
With these upgrades, the beach now features three new lifeguard towers, five accessible roll-up walkways, and an automatic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) system known as Autopulse. These enhancements aim to bolster user support and establish the area as a cardio-safe zone.
Commitment to Inclusion
“The renewal of lifesaving equipment and the installation of accessible walkways demonstrate the City Council’s commitment to service quality, inclusion, and sustainability,” highlighted Pedro Quevedo, the Councillor for Local Development, Tourism, and Ciudad de Mar.
The lifeguard towers have been strategically installed near Tomás Miller, Olof Palme, and Almansa streets, strengthening monitoring points for the lifeguard service. Their white design and materials resistant to marine environments ensure durability, safety, and energy efficiency, featuring solar-powered public address systems, Wi-Fi, SOS points, and electric charging stations.
Accessible Walkways
The new flexible accessible walkways have been placed at the access points on Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Hierro, Padre Cueto, and Tomás Miller streets. These walkways are made from anti-slip, antibacterial, and high-resistance materials. They include reflective markings for individuals with low vision and can support loads of up to 3.5 tonnes, allowing the passage of wheelchairs or light maintenance vehicles.
Advancements in Medical Assistance
The Autopulse system automates CPR, replacing manual compression with an intelligent cardiocompressor that adjusts to the size and resistance of each patient. This marks the second such unit available at Las Canteras.
The flexible walkways were contracted to Kaldevi Ingeniería Geriátrica S.L. for €25,641, the lifeguard towers to B-Mar Serveis Costers Integrats S.L. for €66,500, and the Autopulse system to Global Emergencias for €19,000.
With these improvements, Ciudad de Mar reinforces its commitment to a safe, accessible, and sustainable beach, establishing Las Canteras as an international benchmark for tourist quality and citizen well-being.
