The Legacy of Traditional Canarian Clothing in Tenerife’s Classrooms
The legacy of traditional Canarian clothing enters the classrooms of Tenerife with a clear aim: to ensure that new generations understand that these garments are part of the cultural heritage of the Islands and that their use goes far beyond a popular celebration.
The Cabildo of Tenerife and the Municipality of Santa Cruz are promoting the Canarian Clothing Educational Project, an initiative currently running in eleven schools throughout the capital of Tenerife. The aim is to educate schoolchildren about the history, values, and importance of preserving traditional attire.
A Heritage Learned from Childhood
This programme seeks to educate students about the origins and meanings of Tenerife’s traditional clothing, fostering its preservation and encouraging appropriate use linked to the cultural identity of the Archipelago.
Efraín Medina, the Councillor for Employment and Education at the Cabildo, emphasised that wearing clothing inherited from past generations should not be viewed merely as a costume.
“Dressing in the heritage passed down from our island ancestors cannot be seen as a costume, but rather as an essential part of our inherited legacy,” he stated.
Understanding History to Preserve Traditions
Medina further highlighted the need to promote educational actions that enable children and young people to understand the historical value of these garments and how they should be worn.
“It is vital that, from their early years of schooling, our children learn that properly wearing traditional clothing is a way to honour our identity and preserve a legacy that deserves respect,” he affirmed.
Craftsmanship, Culture, and Identity
Among the planned activities are educational and instructional actions aimed at spreading awareness about the craftsmanship processes involved in creating traditional Tenerife clothing.
Moreover, the project seeks to raise social awareness regarding the need to protect and respect the traditional uses associated with these garments, especially in contexts where they are increasingly visible during festivals, processions, and popular celebrations.
Ensuring Generational Transition
Through this initiative, the Cabildo aims to bring cultural heritage closer to the younger population and ensure the transfer of knowledge and traditions between generations.
The island corporation believes that understanding traditional attire is a key tool for reinforcing collective identity and ensuring that one of the most representative elements of Canarian culture continues to be part of the Islands’ future.
